Travel Around the World in 8 Dishes at the Hillside Cafe


It’s that time of year again – where every student faces the inevitable stressors of the semester ending. Give yourself a break and enjoy a variety of dishes from all over the world at Dining Services’ Around the World event, Wednesday, April 19, from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at Hillside Dining Center.

“It’s something students have never seen for any other event on campus,” executive chef Jason Butcherite said. “To have such a diverse menu served in the fashion we are serving it in – I don’t think it’s ever been done.”

Butcherite created the menu for the event, featuring dishes inspired by the Philippines, France, Japan, Mexico, the Pacific Northwest, Italy, West Africa and India. Some of the menu items include Chicken Adobo, Ahi Togarashi, Chile Braised Pork, Goat Korma and more. Many of the ingredients used in the dishes are specialty order items that students do not get to see every day. (You can view a full menu below.) 

“I wanted to showcase all of my favorites,” Butcherite said.

The serving concept for the event will differ from how dishes are served day-to-day. Instead of picking and choosing items to create a customized plate, students will get plated meal items.

“Everything is on the plate for a reason,” Butcherite said. “Students should get a true representation of what it is supposed to look like, taste like, feel like – everything.”

To encourage people to try more than just one plate, prices will be discounted for the event, Hillside General Manager Cindy Lou Carlson – Combs said.

Students who attend the event will have the opportunity to enter to win one of four Coug travel bags.

The Dining Services staff at Hillside is excited to provide students with a unique event that gives exposure to foods from different areas.
